Summary:
Mystic River is a story about three boys who are best friends and whose lives are forever changed when they are stopped on the street outside their homes by two men posing as cops. The men kidnap one of the boys Dave Boyle (Tim Robbins) and end up sexually assaulting him over a period of several days. The movie then flashes forward to the boys grown up living separate lives in the same Boston neighborhood. The main plot of the film occurs when one of the friends Jimmy Markum (Sean Penn) is faced with the reality that his daughter has been killed in a mysterious accident. The third friend Sean Devine (Kevin Bacon) is a cop investigating the accident. A tragic series of events then unfolds leaving the three friends wondering how things would have been different for them had Dave not been faced with the horrific events of his childhood.
Why You Should See This Movie:
Mystic River was in my opinion the second best film of the year last year behind Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. It is a masterfully told story with superb acting, directing, effects combined with a powerful intriguing story. First of all, the acting in this film is probably the best I have ever seen in a movie. It was so good collectively that it is difficult to decide who should have gotten best actor at the academy awards. Sean Penn ended up with Best Actor and Tim Robbins with Best Supporting Actor both deservedly. Sean Penn was phenomenal at perfectly demonstrating the combination of anger, grief and pain one must feel when dealing with the loss of a child. Tim Robbins is equally impressive at creating a character that is obviously plagued by the shadows in his past and someone desperately attempting to free himself from the horrible memories of his capture. Kevin Bacon and Lawrence Fishburne are impeccable as the cops investigating the murder and Marcia Gay Harden and Laura Linney are perfect in their roles as supportive wives. The content of the film is very disturbing, but Clint Eastwood presents it in a beautiful and effective way creating a movie that is entertaining throughout. The filming and score are perfect in creating an eerie, mysterious feel that matches the acting and plot. The plot itself as mentioned is incredibly profound and real and is presented beautifully creating a mix of mystery, grief and ingtrigue.
Why You Shouldn't See This Movie:
If you are offended by violence and adult situations, this movie probably isn't the best for you. Also, the profound subject matter is not for immature audiences and should be taken into account when deciding what type of movie you are in for.
Conclusion:
Mystic River is a beautifully directed film that benefits from incredible acting performances by a group of incredibly talented actors, and a profound and intriguing story that is sure to stick with you long after you watch it.
