Summary:
Shark Tale is an animated Dreamworks story about a shark slaying fish named Oscar (Will Smith) who feels like his life is too ordinary and has aspirations to have a better more prestigious life. Lenny (Jack Black) is a timid, vegetartian shark who is afraid to kill anything and is viewed as a failure by his father who is hoping to turn the business of dominating the reef over to his son eventually. Lenny and Oscar run into each other and when an anchor kills Lenny's brother, Oscar is mistakenly identified as the killer, and as a result becomes an instant celebrity. While Oscar relishes his new life, he also comes to realize that living a lie is difficult. Lenny and Oscar decide to team up in order to convince the reef that Oscar is for real and also provide Lenny with a place to run away from home.
Why You Should See This Movie:
The acting in the film is pretty good although over the top at times. Will Smith does a good job at creating a hip fish with an attitude. Zellweger and Black were also effective creating their characters. The animation was pretty great bringing incredible colors and interesting characters to the screen.
Why You Shouldn't See This Movie:
If the above summary seemed disjointed and confusing, it is an accurate portrayal of the plot. The worst part of the film by far is the screenplay. The filmmakers attempted to accomplish too many things in this film and didn't end up focusing on any of them. I couldn't decide if the plot was going for the love story idea, the underachieving fish idea, or the disappointed father idea. If the plot would've been a bit more focused, the entertainment value and interest in the film would've been much better. The soundtrack wasn't that great and didn't seem to add much to the film.
Conclusion:
Shark Tale is an interesting animated film with good computer effects that ultimately lacked the plot and interest needed in order to carry a non live action film.
