Review:

Summary:
Alexander is the life story of the legendary leader of the Macedonian army that swept through the world in the 4th century BC conquering almost the entire collection of western civilizations. The movie tells of how Alexander was born and groomed to follow in the footsteps of his father Phillip of Macedonia and to accomplish the goal of conquering Persia. It continues on telling the remaining story of Alexander, his decisions, and how his legacy was viewed by his peers.
Why You Should See This Movie:
After all of the bad press preceding this film, I have to say that I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I like historical films whether or not they are exactly accurate according to the general consensus of historians. Taking into account that perspective, I can see how some people would disagree with me though. I thought the acting was pretty good in most respects. Farrell and Jolie were pretty great creating powerful characters that had incredible emotions and passion. The film is over 3 hours long which for most films is a death sentence, but I never found myself bored or hoping for it to end. The story of Alexander and his life was so intriguing to me that I was interested to see how Oliver Stone would present it. The presentation by Stone was pretty great with interesting flashbacks and flashforwards as well as great symbolism and use of filming effects in order to tell the story in a certain way.
Why You Shouldn't See This Movie:
As mentioned above, I can see how some people would be able to trash this film for a couple of reasons. First, the length would be very annoying if you aren?t interested in the topic, as well as the very liberal and graphic depiction of violence, homosexuality and sexual situations. Also, the film to me was intended to be a historical film told not to please the typical movie goer that likes a short story with a focused story and a quick resolution, so if you are looking for that, you will not like this film.
Conclusion:
Alexander is a wonderful historical film about one of the most intriguing people and time periods in human history that is a must see at the theater by anyone interested in historical films. For those that want a purely entertaining film, you will likely be disappointed at the theater and would be better to wait for it on DVD to help absorb the huge running time.
