Summary:
Thank you for Smoking is a unique story about a lobbyist (Aaron Eckhart) whose job it is to spin the tabacco industry in a positive way. Eckhart's talent is his ability to talk and argue virtually any side of any topic. The film takes various turns culminating in a showdown between Eckhart and a Senate committee attempting to put warning labels on cigarrettes.
Why You Should See This Movie:
This film gains it's biggest strength from the unique fact that it focuses on what could be considered the bad guy and actually shows the entire story through his eyes. Aaron Eckhart does a fabulous job creating his character and there were other notable performances from David Koechner (a firearms lobbyist) and William H. Macy (the senator attempting to add the warning labels). The film is put together very well with unique directing. Several times the film stopped briefly in order to add a specific dialogue or picture that often times was very funny. The story while seeming to be a negative one, actually has a very worthwhile and positive message of allowing people to be responsible for themselves instead of following the leader.
Why You Shouldn't See This Movie:
My only criticism of this film, and it is a very small one, was that it seemed to drag in the middle. Most of the movie was very fast paced and kept you very interested, but it lost momentum with about 45 minutes to go before it picked up at the end to end with a flurrish.
Conclusion:
Thank You for Smoking is a unique film that is definitely worth checking out due to it's worthwhile story, interesting directing and talented cast.
