Review:

Summary:
The Deer Hunter is a story of a group of friends who are hunting buddies in the Vietnam era. Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken are two of the friends who end up in a prison camp in Vietnam and are exposed to the ruthless tactics employed by the enemy, especially the crazy game of Russian roulette. When the friends return home, De Niro struggles but not nearly as much as Walken.
Why You Should See This Movie:
Apparently this film is a classic and one that won best picture in the 1970?s. I thought the very important casting of De Niro and Walken saved this film from complete disaster. The two of them give great performances and are worth watching the film for.
Why You Shouldn't See This Movie:
The problem I had with this film is one that I have mentioned before in other reviews. In order for a film to succeed over a three hour period, it has to either have a lot of story to tell, or be intriguing enough to last for that amount of time. In this case, I think the plot could have been explained in about a half an hour instead of 180 minutes. The scenes that were good were very powerful and conveyed a great image, but they were so spread out that there was absolutely no momentum at all. The end result was a boring movie that lasted way too long.
Conclusion:
The Deer Hunter is a truly boring movie that is held up by a couple of powerful scenes and the acting skills of Robet De Niro and Christopher Walken.
