Summary:
The Sea Inside is a drama looking at the right for a person with quadriplegia to commit suicide. Javier Bardem plays a man who has lived 28 years with the inability to move his arms or legs because of a swimming accident in which he broke his neck. Bardem fights the court and public opinion that anyone who assists him in his death can be punished. His family is split on the issue and unsure on how best to support him, forcing Bardem to look outside his family in order to achieve his goals.

Why You Should See This Movie:
This film was chosen by the Academy as the best foreign film of 2004 and although I have not seen any of the films nominated other than this one, I would have to agree with the award. Javier Bardem gives an incredible performance, probably the role he should have been nominated for best actor rather than his performance in Before Night Falls. His supporting cast is also impressive taking advantage of the emotion and power a film about this subject has going for it. The film is amazingly interesting in spite of being filmed completely in Spanish forcing you to read the film?s subtitles unless you know Spanish. It starts off with Bardem looking for someone to help him end his life and expertly cuts back to show how his accident occurred as well as how his family adapted to their new roles as caregivers. The story brings up many moral themes such as the individuality of people with quadriplegia, and their different views of the world, as well as the obvious question of the right of a disabled person to die with dignity.

Why You Shouldn't See This Movie:
As mentioned above, if you can?t get through the subtitle thing, you won?t be able to appreciate the power of the film. Also, I don?t think it can be considered a problem with the film, but I didn?t like the character of the lawyer who he hired to help him with his quest. Without spoiling anything, she wasn?t exactly what I wanted out of her.

Conclusion:
The Sea Inside is a powerful and impressive drama that puts to the screen some interesting moral questions in an intriguing film also bolstered by an impressive performance by Javier Bardem.
