Summary:
House of Flying Daggers is a Chinese martial arts film about the time around the fall of the Tang Dynasty. As the government begins to fail and corruption reigns, an underground society called the House of Flying Daggers whose goal is to continue to undermine the dynasty, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Two local captains (Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro) are given the task to discover and capture an important member of the secret society. The two decide to capture Mei (Zhang Ziyi) in order to accomplish their task. The two quickly realize that they are attracted to her and she to them setting up a dangerous situation.
Why You Should See This Movie:
If you are into Chinese martial arts films, this one is for you. The filming, cinematography (nominated for the oscar) and directing are incredible. Much like the film Hero, released earlier this year, the use of color and camera angles is absolutely stunning and unparalleled in any film I have seen before. This film is better than Hero in regards to it?s story which is laid out much better and contains more emotion and power behind it. The acting was good, but difficult to tell if it is really great through subtitles.
Why You Shouldn't See This Movie:
After all of that praise, I have to say that for the most part, I was pretty bored through the movie. I think it had just too many painfully slow scenes that caused the momentum of the film to grind to a halt. During those scenes, it was fun to watch the incredible colors and filming effects, but it also had the effect of putting me to sleep.
Conclusion:
House of Flying Daggers is a film that some people will definitely appreciate, however, it?s subtitles and slow, often boring scenes will cause others to reach for the remote.
