Summary:
Vera Drake tells the story of a woman in England in the 1950?s who leads a very normal, happy life with her husband and two children who suspect nothing out of the ordinary from her. Her secret hidden life, however, involves connecting with pregnant young women through a friend and assisting the young women in having an abortion. She lives her double life for 20 years until one patient falls ill and almost dies. When the young woman goes for medical assistance, Vera?s secret life begins to unravel.

Why You Should See This Movie:
It took me a while, but I have finally seen all of the films in which actresses were nominated in 2004 for best actress. Hilary Swank won for Million Dollar Baby, mostly because of her star power, as well as the success of the film. Imelda Staunton, however, gives the most impressive and underrated performance by an actress with her stirring portrayal of Vera Drake. She perfectly captures the identity of a woman with only good intentions, but caught in a moral dilemma. She was most definitely the best actress in 2004. The film demonstrates the incredibly difficult moral dilemma for health care professionals attempting to help women safely terminate an unwanted pregnancy. It takes a few minutes for the film to get going, but quickly turns into a movie that is riveting. The director does a wonderful job at creating scenes that hold incredible power with minimal dialogue. The plot is very controversial and therefore is very interesting as long as the viewer is open minded enough to watch a film about abortion.

Why You Shouldn't See This Movie:
There is nothing technically wrong with this film, but the topic of abortion could be offensive to some.

Conclusion:
Vera Drake is a fabulous film highlighted by an absolutely incredible acting performance by Imelda Staunton that sheds light on the serious and controversial topic of abortion.
