Summary:
Kingdom of Heaven is an epic tale of the Christian crusades to defend the Holy Land from Muslim attackers. Set in the 12th Century, this story focus?s a young peasant named Balian (Orlando Bloom) and his journey to the Holy Land initially intended for him to receive peace and forgiveness. When he arrives in Jerusalem and begins to understand the politics of the region, he realizes that keeping the peace between Christians and Muslims is important, yet very difficult to achieve. He ends up defending the city from an overwhelming attacking force against all odds.
Why You Should See This Movie:
Ridley Scott has provided us with classic stories like Braveheart and Gladiator, and in my opinion, he has succeeded again in bringing important historical events to the big screen. This film is put together very well, as Scott carefully tells a story that could easily offend Muslim?s as well as Christians. He is able to maintain an unbiased and truthful stance on the subject and present a film that is educational and entertaining. Orlando Bloom is very impressive in his first attempt to carry a movie by himself. He is able to craft a character that has tremendous inner strength and is able to deliver the all important war pep talk at the end of the film that is not easy to do without looking stupid. The story is a powerful one that is worth watching if you are interested at all in history.
Why You Shouldn't See This Movie:
The only problem I had with the film is that it could have been a bit shorter. I felt like the part of the movie where Balian arrived in Jerusalem and the real action began was a bit slow and could have been shortened to concentrate the film a bit. The violence didn?t bother me in this film because it seemed appropriate for the subject matter, but it was fairly gruesome at times and could turn some people off.
Conclusion:
Kingdom of Heaven is a superb film about the Holy Crusades in the middle Ages that is another feather in Ridley Scott?s cap firmly entrenching him as one of the better directors of our time, especially in historical epics.
