Summary:
Sideways is a character study about two college friends off on a wine tasting trip intended to be a final fling before Jack?s (Thomas Haden Church) wedding. Miles (Paul Giamatti) is a down on his luck middle aged struggling writer who accompanies his friend on the trip which he envisions as a male bonding experience. Jack?s intentions, however, are more focused on a last sexual fling before tying the not.

Why You Should See This Movie:
First, it should probably be noted that this film is definitely not for everyone and the positive comments I have for it could easily be turned around by someone who does not appreciate a low budget artsy film. That being said, I thought the film was great. The acting by both Giamatti and Church is awesome creating distinct and somehow interesting characters that were at times depressing, at times hilarious, but all the time intriguing. The film is kind of long for a film without any type of action, but somehow managed to hold my attention through more than 2 hours of conversation and relationship building. The filming effects were also pretty great despite the aforementioned low budget, with a subtle yet effective score and the choice of scenery and directing were great. The story wasn?t anything too deep, but rather a description and illustration of a pretty average and normal life situation occurring quite often I am sure to characters of similar age and personality.

Why You Shouldn't See This Movie:
As mentioned above, as many good things as there were about this film, I could definitely see how someone could be both bored to tears and offended by this movie. The use of the f word was pretty rampant as well as some pretty graphic sex scenes. There was quite a bit of comedy and romance, but as mentioned above, this is not an action movie and therefore could definitely be boring to some.

Conclusion:
Sideways is a fabulous character sketch that excelled in its attempts to bring a real life situation to the big screen in a funny, interesting way that should be enjoyed by people interested in a film not about big bangs and fast action.
