Review:

Summary:
Master and Commander is an epic war film about the battle for the seas during the time of Napolean. Russell Crowe plays ?Lucky? Jack Aubrey, the captain of the H M S Surprise, an aging but impressive British ship whose orders are to find and destroy the French ship the Nautilus. The chase begins off the coast of Brazil but doesn?t end until they have traveled around the horn of South America to the Galapagos Islands of the Pacific
Why You Should See This Movie:
The acting in the film is quality by several actors, especially by Crowe who steps into the leadership role effectively as he has in past movies such as Gladiator. Also, the filming and effects of the ocean battles are impressive and unmatched in any other film. The producers built a life size replica of an old British ship in order to recreate the reality of the battles. The film is very artsy and probably deserved all of the technical nominations it received in last year?s academy awards, although the Lord of the Rings deservedly received the awards.
Why You Shouldn't See This Movie:
The movie in my opinion could have been very good had it stayed on task a bit more. After the opening sequence and plot development, the film seemed to stray off course and tell several side stories that were mildly interesting but took away from the main point of the film. When the story returned to the chase of the French ship towards the end, I wondered what the middle hour of the film was really about. I think if the editors would have shortened the film and concentrated the story to one main plot, this movie could have been one of last years best. Instead, it ended up being an average film that will definitely fade over time.
Conclusion:
Master and Commander is a well filmed and acted movie that fans of sailing will appreciate although the story wanders so much that it could easily put you to sleep before you see the conclusion.
